Understanding Identity Counselling
Identity is shaped by many different experiences throughout our lives. It includes how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and whether we feel able to live authentically.
For some people, identity counselling is about exploring sexuality or preparing to come out. For others, it may involve rebuilding confidence after years of hiding parts of themselves, navigating life after divorce, questioning long-held beliefs, or learning to accept themselves more fully.
For many gay, bi and queer men, identity can also be influenced by experiences of rejection, discrimination, internalised shame, family expectations or cultural and religious beliefs.
Identity counselling offers an opportunity to better understand these experiences while developing greater self-acceptance, confidence and authenticity.
Is Identity Counselling Right for You?
Identity counselling may be helpful if you are:
Questioning your sexuality.
Thinking about coming out.
Adjusting after coming out.
Exploring your sense of identity.
Struggling with self-acceptance.
Living with internalised shame.
Recovering from religious trauma.
Navigating family relationships.
Feeling disconnected from yourself.
Wanting to live more authentically.
There is no right or wrong stage to seek counselling. Some people attend before coming out, while others seek support years later as they continue learning more about themselves.
Common Signs and Experiences
Everyone's journey is different, but common experiences include:
Self Doubt
Questioning who you are or whether you truly belong.
Fear
Worrying about rejection, judgement or how others may respond.
Relationships
Navigating family dynamics, friendships or intimate relationships while exploring your identity.
Authenticity
Feeling like different versions of yourself exist depending on who you are with.
Why Identity Can Feel Complicated
Identity is rarely shaped by one single experience.
Many gay, bi and queer men grow up receiving messages about who they should be, how they should behave, or what relationships are expected of them. These experiences can influence confidence, self-acceptance and emotional wellbeing long into adulthood.
Some people also carry experiences of bullying, discrimination, family rejection, religious trauma or minority stress that make authenticity feel difficult.
Counselling provides an opportunity to explore these experiences with curiosity and compassion, helping you move towards a stronger sense of self rather than continuing to live according to other people's expectations.
How Identity Counselling Can Help
Together we may work towards:
Exploring your identity.
Building self-acceptance.
Developing greater confidence.
Navigating the coming out process.
Healing from shame.
Understanding the impact of past experiences.
Strengthening boundaries.
Improving relationships.
Building authentic connections.
Living more consistently with your values.
Counselling is not about telling you who you are. It is about creating space for you to better understand yourself.
What We Might Explore Together

Sexuality
Coming out
Self-acceptance
Internalised shame

Confidence
