Understanding Online Counselling

Online counselling is counselling delivered through a secure video session rather than in the same physical room. It provides the same opportunity to talk, reflect, explore challenges and receive professional support, while allowing you to attend from a location that feels private and comfortable.

For many clients, online counselling removes some of the barriers that can make seeking support more difficult. There is no travel time, no waiting room, and no need to be located near a specialist LGBTQIA+ affirming counsellor.

Online counselling can support people navigating anxiety, stress, burnout, relationships, identity, coming out, confidence, loneliness, grief and broader mental health concerns.

At Bent Couch, online counselling is available across Australia and is designed to feel calm, respectful and personal, even through a screen.

Is Online Counselling Right for You?

Online counselling may be helpful if you:

  • Want counselling from home or another private space.

  • Live outside Melbourne or in regional or rural Australia.

  • Have a busy work schedule.

  • Travel regularly.

  • Prefer not to attend a clinic in person.

  • Want access to LGBTQIA+ affirming counselling.

  • Need flexibility around family or other commitments.

  • Feel more comfortable opening up from your own environment.

  • Are looking for individual or couples counselling online.

You do not need to be in crisis before booking online counselling. Many people use online sessions as a regular space to pause, reflect and better understand themselves.

Common Reasons People Choose Online Counselling

People choose online counselling for many different reasons.

Convenience

You can attend from home, work or another private space without needing to travel to a clinic.

Privacy

Some people feel more comfortable speaking openly from a familiar environment.

Access

Online counselling can make LGBTQIA+ affirming support available to people across Australia, including those outside major cities.

Flexibility

Sessions can be easier to fit around work, parenting, travel and everyday responsibilities.

Why Online Counselling Can Be Helpful

Finding the right counsellor is not always easy, especially if you are looking for someone who understands the experiences of gay, bi and queer men.

In some areas, specialist LGBTQIA+ affirming services may be limited or difficult to access. Online counselling helps reduce that barrier by allowing you to connect with Bent Couch from wherever you are in Australia.

For some clients, being in their own space also makes the counselling process feel less intimidating. You may feel more grounded sitting in your own room, with your own cup of tea, and without needing to travel before or after the session.

Online counselling can be especially useful when privacy, distance, time or comfort are important parts of making support possible.

How Online Counselling Can Help

Online counselling can support the same concerns as in-person counselling.

Together we may work towards:

  • Managing anxiety, stress or overthinking.

  • Understanding emotional patterns.

  • Building confidence and self-acceptance.

  • Navigating coming out or identity.

  • Improving relationships and communication.

  • Exploring burnout and workplace stress.

  • Strengthening boundaries.

  • Reducing shame and self-criticism.

  • Supporting mental health and wellbeing.

  • Creating practical steps for everyday life.

The focus is not just on what is happening but on helping you better understand yourself and respond in ways that support your wellbeing.

Meet Shaun Williams

I'm an ACA Registered Counsellor based in Melbourne, supporting gay, bisexual, queer and LGBTQIA+ men both in person and online across Australia.

My counselling combines professional training with lived experience and years of community involvement supporting gay and queer men's wellbeing.

Alongside counselling, I'm the founder of Bent Couch, facilitator of Community Couch Conversations, co-founder of Gay Fathers Worldwide and creator of Australia's annual Gay and Queer Men's Mental Health Survey.

For many clients, knowing their counsellor understands both the clinical and lived experience aspects of their journey provides reassurance from the very beginning.
