Individual Counselling for Gay, Bisexual & Queer Men

Professional Individual Counselling in Melbourne & Online Across Australia

"I'm not sure where to start."

It's one of the most common things I hear.

Often it's followed by something like, "I'm carrying so much, but I don't know where to begin."

Many gay and queer men arrive carrying anxiety, shame, relationship difficulties, loneliness, workplace stress, or simply the feeling that something isn't quite right.

You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

We'll begin wherever you are today, one conversation at a time.

What Brings Men to Counselling?

Every person's story is different, but many of the men I meet arrive carrying similar thoughts, questions and experiences.

Counselling isn't about having the "right" reason to reach out. It's about creating space to understand what's happening and deciding where you'd like to go from here.

✓ Anxiety and overthinking

✓ Relationship difficulties

✓ Low confidence and self-esteem

✓ Shame and self-criticism

✓ Coming out and identity

✓ Workplace stress and burnout

✓ Loneliness and isolation

✓ Grief and loss

✓ Dating and intimacy

✓ Sexual wellbeing

✓ Family relationships

✓ Life transitions

How Individual Counselling Can Help

Every person's story is different, so counselling is never about following a script or offering one-size-fits-all advice.

Together, we'll explore what is happening in your life, identify the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and develop practical ways to move forward.

Counselling may help you:

✓ Better understand your thoughts, emotions and behaviours

✓ Reduce anxiety, stress and overthinking

✓ Build confidence and self-acceptance

✓ Strengthen relationships and communication

✓ Process grief, loss and life transitions

✓ Develop healthier coping strategies

✓ Improve emotional resilience

✓ Feel more connected to yourself and others

✓ Clarify your values and the life you want to create

Whether you're facing a specific challenge or simply want a space to reflect and grow, counselling provides an opportunity to better understand yourself and create meaningful, lasting change.

Counselling Looks Different for Everyone

Some people arrive with one clear issue they want to work through.

Others simply know something doesn't feel quite right.

Counselling may involve understanding current challenges, exploring long-standing patterns, strengthening relationships, processing grief, improving confidence or developing healthier ways to respond to stress.

There is no single path through counselling. Every session is guided by your goals, your pace and what feels most important to you.

My Approach to Counselling

Rather than telling you what to do, my role is to help you better understand yourself.

My approach is collaborative, practical and tailored to your individual circumstances. Together, we'll explore what sits beneath the challenges you're experiencing while developing realistic strategies that support your wellbeing.

As an ACA Registered Counsellor, I draw on evidence-informed approaches including:

  • Person-Centred Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

  • Psychoeducation

  • Mindfulness-based strategies

Most importantly, counselling is shaped around you, your goals and your experiences.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Many people worry about what their first counselling session will be like.

You don't need to prepare a speech or have everything figured out before you arrive.

The first session is simply an opportunity to begin the conversation.

We'll talk about what's brought you to counselling, what you'd like support with, and what you hope might be different in your life moving forward.

There is no pressure to share everything straight away. We work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

By the end of the session, you'll have a clearer understanding of your goals and whether we're the right fit to continue working together.

Meet Shaun Williams

I'm an ACA Registered Counsellor based in Melbourne, supporting gay, bisexual, queer and LGBTQIA+ men both in person and online across Australia.

My counselling combines professional training with lived experience and years of community involvement supporting gay and queer men's wellbeing.

Alongside counselling, I'm the founder of Bent Couch, facilitator of Community Couch Conversations, co-founder of Gay Fathers Worldwide and creator of Australia's annual Gay and Queer Men's Mental Health Survey.

For many clients, knowing their counsellor understands both the clinical and lived experience aspects of their journey provides reassurance from the very beginning.
